Shell cameos have a long history in jewellery, with the contrasting layers of the shell carefully carved to create a raised image. This petite cameo is set in 9ct gold and is 11mm wide and 24mm long including the bail. It hangs from a 50cm gold chain with a bolt clasp marked 9K. The chain links do not lie perfectly flat because of the small size of the links and age. The pendant and chain weigh 2.49g together.
