This set of four hand-forged pewter spoons dates to the 18th century and each measures 20.5cm long, with weights of 84.48g, 83.08g, 87.19g, and 86.9g. Early pewter contained a high proportion of lead, which made it relatively soft compared with modern alloys, and examples like these show the gentle wear expected from centuries of use. Their elongated bowls reflect an earlier spoon form, as the rounded “soup spoon” shape was not widely introduced until the 19th century, meaning spoons like these would have served for a variety of foods including soups and stews. Because of the lead content they are recommended for display only rather than use. The set is sold together as four spoons for $95.
