Codd Bottle. Cannington Shaw & Company England c.1900
$145.00
Codd bottles were invented in 1872 by Hiram Codd and used a glass marble held against a rubber seal by the pressure of carbonated drinks, an ingenious alternative to the traditional cork. This example, complete with marble, dates to around 1900 and has a wonderful Tasmanian connection, having been made for the Cascade Brewery Co. Limited in Hobart. The bottle is embossed “The Property of the Cascade Brewery Co Limited” and “Cannington Shaw & Company Makers St Helens,” referring to the English glassworks in St Helens, Lancashire. It retains its distinctive glass marble, is 19cm high and weighs 400g. An interesting piece of early Tasmanian brewing and bottling history.
