Vesta cases were a common everyday item in the late 19th century, used to carry matches safely before the widespread use of lighters, and often made in novelty forms that reflected personal interests or humour. This example dates to around 1880 and is formed in the shape of a horse’s lower leg, a design that would have appealed to those with an interest in equestrian life. It is made from a brass tone metal, originally plated silver, and weighs 27.58g, measuring 76mm long, with a push button mechanism that opens the hinged lid. The interior is stamped “DEPONIRT,” indicating German registration, and the strike point is located on the underside of the hoof, integrated neatly into the design. A practical object in its time and now a distinctive collectible with strong character.
